My little quilt guild has been making quilts for the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative over the past year. It's been an enjoyable, low commitment project to make small (9" x 12") mini-art quilts to donate. The art quilts are sold or auctioned and the proceeds help fund Alzheimer's research.
The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative® (www.AlzQuilts.org) is a national, grassroots charity whose mission is to raise awareness and fund research. The AAQI auctions and sells donated quilts, and sponsors a nationally touring exhibit of quilts about Alzheimer's. The AAQI has raised more than $916,000 since January 2006.
I made the ones you see here from scraps leftover from several different projects. I like the style so much that I am building more crazy squares to make a full sized quilt in the same way. I sewed the little scraps together, cutting straight edges where I needed to and when I had a piece big enough, I trimmed to a 4" square.
The Initiative is drawing to a close this year so we will be moving on to a new charity cause. But in the meantime, look for some of our little quilts on the auction or sales pages.
